Background of the study
In recent years, the accessibility and consumption of Over-the-Counter (OTC) drugs among youth have become a subject of increasing concern worldwide. OTC drugs, which are medications available without a prescription, play a significant role in self-medication practices, particularly among young individuals. The lack of regulation and control over the consumption of OTC drugs has raised several health and social issues, particularly among youth populations in various regions.
Over-the-Counter (OTC) drugs encompass a wide range of medications that are available without a prescription, including pain relievers, cold and flu medications, antacids, and allergy medications, among others (Nair et al., 2018). These drugs are easily accessible through pharmacies, supermarkets, and convenience stores, making them convenient options for individuals seeking relief from common ailments without the need for a healthcare provider's consultation. The accessibility and affordability of OTC drugs have contributed to their widespread use among different age groups, including youth.
Youth populations often engage in self-medication practices, which involve the use of medications without consulting a healthcare professional (Alam, Iqbal, & Qureshi, 2018). Self-medication with OTC drugs is driven by various factors, including perceived convenience, cost-effectiveness, and the desire for autonomy in managing one's health. Additionally, social influences, such as peer pressure and advertising, may encourage youth to use OTC drugs for recreational purposes or to cope with stress and emotional issues.
While OTC drugs are generally considered safe when used as directed, their misuse or overuse can lead to adverse health consequences, especially among youth. Common risks associated with OTC drug misuse include medication interactions, allergic reactions, drug dependence, and overdose (Alam et al., 2018). Additionally, some OTC drugs may mask underlying health conditions or delay appropriate medical treatment, leading to the progression of diseases or complications.
The misuse of OTC drugs among youth also has significant social and economic implications for communities and healthcare systems. Substance abuse, including the misuse of OTC drugs, can contribute to societal issues such as addiction, impaired cognitive function, and behavioral problems (Nair et al., 2018). Furthermore, the burden of healthcare costs associated with treating OTC drug-related complications places strain on healthcare resources, particularly in low-income communities where access to comprehensive healthcare services may be limited.
Gadan Maiwa, located in Ningi Local Government Area (LGA) of Bauchi State, Nigeria, represents a unique context for studying the effects of lacking access to OTC drugs among youth. Bauchi State, like many regions in Nigeria, faces challenges related to healthcare infrastructure, resource allocation, and public health awareness (World Bank, 2019). Within this context, understanding the patterns of OTC drug consumption and its impact on youth health outcomes in Gadan Maiwa is essential for informing targeted interventions and policy initiatives aimed at promoting safe medication practices and improving healthcare access.
1.2 Statement of the problem
The consumption of Over-the-Counter (OTC) drugs among youth in Gadan Maiwa, Ningi LGA, Bauchi State, presents a complex and pressing public health issue. While studies have explored the prevalence and patterns of OTC drug use among youth in various contexts, there remains a dearth of research specifically focused on the consequences of lacking access to OTC drugs within this regional context. Therefore, the research problem addressed in this study is to assess the effect of the unavailability of Over-the-Counter (OTC) drugs among youth in Gadan Maiwa, Ningi LGA, Bauchi State, Nigeria.
Despite the widespread availability and consumption of OTC drugs globally, limited research has examined the impact of lacking access to these medications, particularly among youth populations in low-resource settings such as Gadan Maiwa, Bauchi State. Existing studies predominantly focus on the prevalence and determinants of OTC drug use, overlooking the consequences of insufficient access to these medications. Thus, there is a significant gap in the literature regarding the health and socio-economic effects of OTC drug unavailability among youth in this specific regional context.
The unavailability of OTC drugs may exacerbate existing health challenges faced by youth in Gadan Maiwa, including the management of common ailments such as pain, fever, and respiratory infections. Without access to OTC medications, youth may resort to alternative, potentially unsafe self-medication practices or delay seeking appropriate medical care, leading to adverse health outcomes and complications. Understanding the health implications of lacking OTC drugs is crucial for informing targeted interventions to address youth health disparities in the community.
In addition to health concerns, the unavailability of OTC drugs may have broader socio-economic implications for youth in Gadan Maiwa and their families. Limited access to affordable medications can strain household budgets and undermine efforts to manage healthcare expenses. Moreover, untreated or poorly managed health conditions resulting from the lack of OTC drugs may contribute to productivity losses, school absenteeism, and long-term economic burdens on individuals and the community. Exploring the socio-economic consequences of OTC drug unavailability is essential for advocating for policy changes and resource allocation to improve healthcare access and affordability for youth in Bauchi State.

1.6 Significance of the study
Public Health Implications:
Understanding the impact of lacking access to OTC drugs on youth health in Gadan Maiwa is crucial for addressing public health concerns within the community. The findings of the research can provide insights into the prevalence of common ailments and health conditions among youth that require OTC medications for management. By identifying the health consequences of OTC drug unavailability, policymakers, healthcare providers, and community stakeholders can develop targeted interventions to improve healthcare access, promote safe medication practices, and mitigate the burden of preventable illnesses. Moreover, raising awareness about the importance of appropriate medication use and seeking timely medical care can contribute to better health outcomes and quality of life for youth in Bauchi State.
Socio-Economic Impact:
Research on the effect of lacking OTC drugs among youth in Gadan Maiwa can shed light on the socio-economic challenges faced by individuals and families in accessing essential medications. Limited access to affordable healthcare can strain household budgets, exacerbate poverty, and hinder economic development in the region. By quantifying the economic burden of OTC drug unavailability, policymakers can prioritize resource allocation and infrastructure development to improve healthcare access and affordability for vulnerable populations. Additionally, addressing socio-economic disparities in healthcare access can promote social equity and contribute to overall community well-being and resilience.
Policy and Programmatic Interventions:
The findings of the research can serve as a foundation for designing evidence-based policies and programmatic interventions aimed at addressing the root causes of OTC drug unavailability and improving healthcare delivery systems in Gadan Maiwa and similar settings. By engaging with stakeholders at the local, regional, and national levels, researchers can advocate for policy changes that enhance regulatory oversight, ensure the availability of essential medications, and strengthen healthcare infrastructure. Moreover, community-based interventions such as health education campaigns, outreach programs, and capacity-building initiatives can empower youth and community members to make informed decisions about their health and access appropriate medical care. By translating research findings into actionable recommendations, this study can contribute to sustainable improvements in healthcare access, quality, and equity for youth in Bauchi State.
